Spain Stuns Germany in Euro 2024 Quarterfinal Thriller!
Dramatic Ending Leaves Hosts Heartbroken
Spain became the first nation to defeat the hosts in a European Championship quarterfinal as they edged out Germany 2-1 in extra time.
The match was a tense affair from the outset, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the back of the net. Spain controlled possession for much of the first half, but Germany's defense held firm. In the second half, Germany came out with renewed vigor and took the lead through a Thomas Müller header.
Just when it seemed Germany was about to close out the victory, Spain's Mikel Merino popped up in the 94th minute to equalize with a stunning strike. The goal sent the match into extra time, where the drama continued.
In the 102nd minute, Germany were awarded a penalty after a handball by Sergio Ramos. However, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention overturned the decision, leaving the German players furious. Spain made the most of their reprieve and scored the winning goal just minutes later through Merino.
The victory sends Spain into the semifinals of the Euro 2024, where they will face the winner of the match between England and Portugal. Germany's hopes of winning the tournament on home soil are now over.
