Breaking News: Major Earthquake Strikes Central Italy

Magnitude 6.2 Quake Causes Widespread Damage, Casualties Feared

Rescue Workers Search for Trapped Victims as Buildings Collapse

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 has struck central Italy, causing widespread damage and loss of life. The epicenter of the quake was located near the town of Amatrice, in the mountainous region of Lazio. Buildings have collapsed, roads have been blocked, and power lines have been cut.

Rescue workers are currently searching for trapped victims, and casualties are feared. The Italian Civil Protection Agency has reported that at least 50 people have been killed, and many more are injured. The agency has also appealed for international assistance.

The earthquake has caused significant damage to historic buildings, including the Church of San Francesco in Amatrice. The church's bell tower collapsed, and the interior of the building has been heavily damaged.

The earthquake is the most powerful to hit Italy in several years. In 2009, a 6.3-magnitude quake in the region of L'Aquila killed more than 300 people and caused widespread destruction.

The Italian government has declared a state of emergency and has mobilized all available resources to respond to the disaster. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has visited the affected area and has pledged to provide all necessary assistance to the victims.
